Accessibility statement

Trimmed With Care; Shear Kindness Inc. wants this website to be usable by everyone, including people who browse with a screen reader, a keyboard only, a magnifier, voice control, or on an old phone with a poor connection.

Our target

We built this site to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. We believe it currently meets that standard, and we describe this as partial conformance rather than full conformance for one honest reason: conformance is a claim about every page and every element, and we have tested thoroughly but not exhaustively. Where we find a gap, we fix it.

What we did

• Checked every color combination by measurement, not by eye. Body text, headings, links, buttons, form borders, and focus outlines all meet or exceed the required contrast ratios. Our brand gold fails contrast requirements as text on a light background, so we do not use it that way. It appears as a background behind dark text, or as text on near-black.
• Made everything reachable by keyboard, with a visible focus outline that stays visible on both light and dark backgrounds, and a “skip to main content” link at the top of every page.
• Sized every control to at least 44 by 44 pixels, which is more generous than the guideline requires, so links and buttons are easier to hit with a thumb or an unsteady hand.
• Wrote real text descriptions for every photograph, describing what is happening rather than labeling anyone.
• Put our founder’s letter into real text. On our previous website those several hundred words existed only as pixels inside an image, which meant a screen reader could not read them at all. That is fixed.
• Used a proper heading structure on every page, so that screen-reader users can navigate by headings.
• Labeled every form field, marked the required ones in text as well as color, and made sure errors are announced.
• Kept text resizable. Zooming to 200% does not break the layout or cut off content.
• Reduced motion. There is very little animation, and what exists is switched off automatically if your device asks for reduced motion.
• Made the site work without JavaScript. Every page, including the contact form, works with scripts disabled or blocked.
• Deliberately used no CAPTCHA. Those “prove you are human” puzzles are a real barrier, and we will not put one between someone and a haircut.

What we know is imperfect

We would rather tell you than let you discover it:

• Light and dark appearance follows your device setting and there is no switch on the page to override it. If your device is set to dark and you would prefer light, you would have to change it in your device settings.
• One photograph is low resolution. The portrait of our founder comes from a printed flyer and is not sharp when enlarged. We are replacing it with a proper photograph.
• We have not tested with every combination of browser, operating system, and assistive technology. Our testing has focused on recent versions of the common ones.
• Some of our event details are incomplete. Dates that are genuinely not yet set say so in plain words rather than showing a placeholder, but that does mean the information you want may not be here yet. You are welcome to contact us and ask.

If any part of this website is difficult or impossible for you to use, please tell us. You do not need to know the technical reason, and “this page did not work for me” is a perfectly good report.

How we tested

We used automated accessibility checking tools, checked contrast ratios by calculation, navigated the whole site using only a keyboard, tested with a screen reader, and viewed every page at screen widths from 320 pixels upwards and at 200% zoom.
